What if I make a mistake with MTD?

An Introduction To Making Tax Digital

What if I make a mistake with MTD?

Making Tax Digital, or MTD, is HMRC’s initiative to move tax reporting away from paper and spreadsheets and into digital record‑keeping and online submissions using approved software.

Instead of submitting one tax return a year, businesses and individuals will keep digital records and send regular updates to HMRC.

As with all transitions, it is possible to make mistakes as you adjust to the new system.

What potential mistakes could be made?

We previously transitioned to MTD for VAT. Here are some common mistakes we’ve seen, to be mindful for with MTD for Income Tax:

  • Waiting until the deadline to act
  • Choosing software that’s too complex
  • Mixing personal and business transactions
  • Breaking digital links without realising
  • Assuming spreadsheets alone are always compliant

Can errors be fixed?

Yes. Most MTD errors can be corrected especially when caught early. Accurate records and regular reviews make fixes far simpler.

A tip to stay MTD compliant:

Update your records little and often. Weekly or monthly checks prevent last‑minute panic and keep your data clean.
